Topic: Indian Mahayana Buddhism– This course focuses on the origin
and development of Mahayana Buddhism in India from roughly the first
century BCE through the fifth century CE. During this seminal period
Buddhists developed new ideas and practices that had profound
effects not only on Buddhism in India, but on the religious
landscape of almost all of South, Central, and East Asia. Topics
covered will include the origin of Mahayana and its relationship to
sectarian Buddhism, Mahayana communities, devotional movements,
meditation practices, and the philosophy of the “Mind-only” schools.
Prerequisite: R250 or consent of instructor.
