Topic: Religious Violence— This course will look at analyses of
religious violence in several contexts and in comparative
perspective. We will consider how various methodological approaches
to the study of religion suggest different considerations for
understanding religious violence. Topics include: studies of
religion and violence in a post-September 11 world, religion and
sacrifice, mysticism and violence, and domestic violence understood
as a religious issue. Materials will range over several religious
traditions, both “western” and “nonwestern”, and several historical
or mythological episodes of religious violence.
