OPEN TO UNDERGRADUATES ONLY

This course provides an introduction to sociological theories and
research regarding the definition, experience, and treatment of
mental disorders. In contrast to other disciplines concerned with
mental disorders, sociology emphasizes the socially- constructed
nature of mental illness categories, the origins of mental illness
in social conditions, and the political underpinnings of the
organization of mental health services. The course focuses on these
three main areas of theory and research, and highlights
distinctively sociological perspectives through academic readings,
movies and other forms of media, and personal memoirs.
