Honors Seminar in Industry & Management
Topic: Global Media Messages
C.E. Beaudoin
Course Description: In this class, students will learn to examine
and apply theoretical frameworks to mass media messages from
different countries. The course will begin with an exploration of
theoretical frameworks, including flow of information, cultural
values and information needs, selective exposure and attention, and
media effects. Then students will apply these theories to different
types of global media messages, including news coverage, website
content, and public health campaigns. These applications will take
form in class discussions and readings, case studies, essays, and a
research paper or research project. Students will examine and
compare media messages from different parts of the world, with
special foci on Africa, Asia and North America. The course will be
taught in a lecture/seminar format, in which student participation
and presentation is essential. By the end of the semester, students
will be able to understand and explain differences in the media
messages of different countries with reference to theory and
practice. Readings will be posted on the library’s electronic
reserve. The class meets from 4 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. on Tuesdays and
Thursdays. Students must obtain authorization from the department to
take this class.
