1. Prerequisites: T205 or T207 or consent of instructor.
2. Course objectives: T311 has several objectives. The first
obvious objective is to survey the history of electronic media from
its beginnings in the 19th century to the present. The second is to
generally familiarize students with the various perspectives that
media history can take. The third is to become a critical reader of
historical writings. At the end of this course, you should
understand the major developments in electronic media history and
the factors that have influenced them. You should also have a sense
for how the electronic media have influenced and been shaped by
American society and culture. You should be able to distinguish
between media histories that take a technological, an institutional,
a social/cultural, and a textual perspective and have an
understanding about what each perspective can and cannot contribute
to historical knowledge. And you should be able to analyze,
interpret, and evaluate historical writings along criteria which are
appropriate to the discipline.
3. Course format: This is a course that will emphasize class
discussion but will also contain lecture and screening of media
texts. Students are expected to attend class and to be prepared to
discuss the associated readings/screenings for the day. There will
be a variety of small group discussions and whole class discussions,
which will generally result in written work that will generally be
collected. Lectures, discussions, and in-class activities have been
designed to accompany, not replace, reading the text. Oncourse will
be used extensively to communicate, disseminate documents, and post
information. 4. Requirements the course will meet: Counts toward
