Course Description: This course examines the effects of mass media
on knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors, at the individual, group,
organizational and societal levels, with emphasis on the impact of
new technologies. To understand the processes by which mass media
influence human cognition at the individual and aggregate levels, a
variety of empirical social science research will be explored. This
class accommodates approximately 76 students and is taught in a
combination of lecture and seminar format. There is no separate
discussion section, so students are expected to participate during
class time. This course is part of the curriculum for the “Media and
Society” area of study. The prerequisite for the course is T205.
There is one required textbook for this course. Additional readings
will also be posted on the library’s electronic reserve. Class meets
TR 2:30 -3:45.
