Course description: This is one of the four core courses in the
department and is required of first-year graduate students. Students
will be introduced to a wide range of mass communication theoretical
approaches, including diffusion of innovations, uses and
gratifications, media system dependency, agenda setting, and
cultivation analysis. Students will apply these social theories to
old and new media technologies. Students will then use this base of
learning to examine and write related scholarly papers. The course
will be taught in a seminar format, in which student participation
and presentation is essential. The class meets from 9:30 a.m. to
10:45 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Students must obtain
authorization from the department to take this class.
