This course will trace the economic development of Modern Europe by
looking at the roles of trade and industrial innovation from the
18th to the 20th centuries.  We will examine alternative
explanations for the Industrial Revolution and the recent debate
comparing Europe to Asia.  Other topics will include the Demographic
Transition, the economics of imperialism, the gold standard,
economic consequences of World War I, the totalitarian economies of
the twentieth century, and the economics of European integration
