Meets 2nd eight weeks only

This course will explore the history and theory of building monuments
and memorials. We will ask questions such as: What role do monuments
and memorials play in societies? What are the politics of
memorialization? How do monuments and memorials relate to the
construction of national and ethnic identities? We will approach these
questions through a series of case studies, among them the Vietnam
Veterans Memorial in Washington,D.C., Holocaust museums in Germany,
Israel and the US, and post-apartheid monuments in South Africa.
