Criminal Justice-COAS | Innocence
P493 | 24741 | Sandys

Contrary to public opinion, biological evidence typically is not
available for DNA testing, and even when it is, how do we know that
it was analyzed correctly? In this class, we will investigate the
causes of wrongful convictions and discuss possible remedies for
minimizing such miscarriages of justice. To the extent possible, we
will also begin to review actual allegations of innocence by inmates
currently in our prisons. We will use Scheck and Neufeld’s
book, “Actual Innocence,” as the foundation for our discussions.

Class meeting: Thursday, 2:30-5:00

Instructor: Professor Marla Sandys, criminal justice department
