Satisfies Cultural Studies List B and A & H requirements.

This course studies the representation of reality in 19th century
and early 20th century fiction and drama through a reading of novels
and short stories by Balzac, Flaubert, Hardy, Zola, and Chekhov, and
of plays by Ibsen and Chekhov.  The course focuses on the
interrelationships between Romanticism and Realism, Realism and
Naturalism, and the Symbolist/Decadent reaction to Realism in poetry
(Baudelaire, Verlaine, Rimbaud, Mallarme), fiction (Huysmans,
Wilde), and drama (Strindberg, Yeats).

Prerequisite: 6 credit hours of literature.
Written Assignments:
Two 7-8 page papers
Take-home final exam
Short response assignments
