C602 is an advanced survey of recent and contemporary theory and
criticism in French and francophone writings.  Beginning with a
brief glance at Formalism and Structuralism, the course explores the
trends and concepts that have dominated the critical scene in the
past four decades: structural psychoanalysis, deconstruction, post-
modernism, feminism, cultural theory and francophone versions of
post-colonial theory.  Short texts by writers such as Barthes,
Bourdieu, Cixous, Deleuze, Derrida, Djebar, Foucault, Glissant,
Irigaray, Kristeva, Lacan, Lyotard.  There will be a midterm and a
final examination.  A term paper may be substituted for the final
exam with permission of the instructor.  There will be no
incompletes in this course.
