English | Introduction to Poetry

1:25p-2:15p MWF (25 students) 3 cr., A&H, IW.

We might call this course “Backing Into Poetry,” because we’ll start
with the present and move back in literary history to discover the
roots of contemporary poetry and the traditions from which it
springs. The goal of the course is to encourage you to love poetry—
reading it, discussing it, discovering it. We’ll read the most
recent edition of Best American Poetry in order to give us a sense
of the contemporary American voice. Then we’ll dig into a bulky
anthology of poetry. Along the way, I’ll supplement our reading with
other voices and other poetic traditions. You can expect to read a
LOT of poetry. We’ll strive to read deeply, to feel the movements
and currents of a poem. We’ll learn to use appropriate literary
terms in our conversations. This will be a discussion-oriented
class; rigorous student participation will be expected. Assignments
will include three papers, a presentation, and a mid-term exam.
