French and Italian | Baudelaire in Context
F640 | 25738 | Prof. Rosemary Lloyd

This seminar, to which students both within and outside the French
and Italian department are warmly invited, will set Baudelaire’s
creative and critical writing in its historical, artistic, literary,
musical, and political context. In addition to reading Les Fleurs
du Mal and Petits poèmes en prose, we will explore
Baudelaire’s art and literary criticism, his essay on Wagner, his
translations of Edgar Allen Poe, and his zestful short story, La
Fanfarlo. We will also look at the problems of translating
Baudelaire, and at some of the solutions attempted. The course will
be taught in English with readings in French.
