Topic: Making Petrarch’s Canzoniere. The first part of the seminar
will be dedicated to the preliminaries of codicology, paleography,
material philology and issues in editing medieval manuscripts and
documents. The rest of the course will examine in detail problems
such as authorial variants, scribal relationships between autograph
and copy (including changes in scribal hand to reflect register and
genre), and the scribal-authorial dynamics of visual poetics in the
case of Petrarch’s lyric poetry both in the context of the material
history of the genre of the “canzoniere” (lyric repertory) in
Provence and Italy as well as in the context of the early reception
of his poetry. Students will work with primary materials prepared by
the specialists involved in the 2003-2004 Antenore facsimile project
and will conduct primary research on XIV- and XV-century manuscripts
of the Rerum vulgarium fragmenta. Joint offer with MEST-M 600.
