Prerequisite: S331 or equivalent.

This course is an introduction to the critical reading of the
literature and film of Spain. Not only will the course familiarize
you with some important Spanish texts, but it will also help you
learn the critical vocabulary needed to analyze and communicate your
ideas effectively about these. We will read representative works
from the main genres of literature: prose fiction, theater and
poetry. Selections include a novella by Unamuno (SAN MANUEL BUENO
MARTIR), a drama by Federico García Lorca (LA CASA DE BERNARDA
ALBA), numerous poems, and two films. Some of the themes we will
take up over the semester are religion, family and gender. The grade
for the course will be based on active class participation, short
writing and oral assignments, and written exams.

Credit given for only two of the following: S331, S332, S333.
