A portion of the above section reserved for majors
This course will have a double focus. On the one hand, it will
provide an introduction to a crucial set of Enlightenment texts,
including, among others, Rousseau, Diderot, Hume, Kant, and a
variety of lesser known writers. On the other hand, it will provide
an introduction to recent and classic historiography on the
Enlightenment, with particular focus on eighteenth-century politics,
culture, and religion. It will be broadly European in scope
(including England), and will range from c.a. 1680 until 1800.
