Honors | Detective Fiction and Modernity
H303 | 6387 | Luis Davila
This seminar will consider detective fiction and its relationship to
the problems of modernity.
We shall consider selections from Poe, Wilkie Collins, Conan Doyle,
Chesterton, Raymond Chandler, Dashell Hammett, Agatha Christie,
Faulkner, Borges and others--as time allows.
The readings will be either short stories or novels.
We will also view some of the classic films based on these
narratives of crime detection, so as to examine the problematics
involved in transforming the words of stories to what are
essentially the images of a movie--always an aesthetic challenge.
