Linguistics | Contrastive Discourse
T660 | 22933 | Beverly Hartford

This course looks at Contrastive Rhetoric/ Discourse, considering the
cross-cultural aspects of discourse organization from both the
reader’s and the writer’s points of view. We will study comparisons of
text organization for different genres and different purposes. Various
aspects of text will be emphasized, including coherence and cohesion,
and the roles of formal and cultural schemata. Particular focus will
be given to the influence of L1 discourse organization on L2 written
discourse. Some of the genres we will look at include expository
writing, narrative, business communications, letters, and news articles.

Students will write a major research paper either comparing the
rhetorical organizations of two languages/cultures, exploring one in
more detail, analyzing texts which second language learners might
read, or analyzing texts written by second language learners.
