R500 | 27153 | Gene Coyle
The two major protagonists for most of the 20th century were
the United States and the U.S.S.R./Russia, and many of the major
international relations events for the period involved both
countries. This course will look at the competition between those
two superpowers from the perspective of intelligence operations,
particularly from the Russian view. We will begin with a look at
the Tsar’s security organization, the Okhrana, move to the role of
the Cheka and various incarnations of the Soviet Union’s state
security organs up through the K.G.B. in helping promote Soviet
foreign policy and assisting the Soviet economy. We will look at
the spy vs. spy contest between Russian and American intelligence
organizations over the decades, Soviet espionage in the Third World
and finish with an examination of the current Russian services, the
SVR and FSB. The course will be taught by a CIA officer whose
career focused on Russia and will include guest lecturers from the
CIA and a former KGB general.
