Topic: Social Effects of the Mass Media

T602 meets from 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The purpose of the course is to introduce graduate students to the
advanced study of role of the media in social change. The course
takes a multidisciplinary approach, examining research in the areas
of mass communication, sociology, political science and social
psychology. Coursepack readings involve the mass media and social
capital, the role of social empowerment in public health and
political life, and so forth. The course is a seminar in the classic
sense, with students leading class discussions and fostering class
learning. Students will present and discuss readings, critique
related research, write an in-depth research proposal, and make a
related in-class presentation.
