Meets first eight weeks only

This course moves students from a passive to an active role as
ethnographers. You will learn how to select and refine research
questions, identify appropriate places and methods for answering your
questions, enter into effective and ethical fieldwork relations and
assess what you are learning. An arrangement to carry out research
exercises in collaboration with a local social service organization
provides the option of realistic practice in all stages of research,
to complement discussion of analytic readings in class and preparation
of a draft research proposal.
