Prerequisite: N&M P: C117 or C106
This course begins a survey through the classes of organic
compounds, including alkanes, alcohols, alkenes, alkynes, ethers,
and epoxides. At the same time, students are introduced to the
structure of organic compounds, including the concept of chirality,
or handedness. The course also lays the groundwork for more complex
topics by teaching students how to think about chemical mechanisms,
introducing the concepts of electrophilicity, nucleophilicity,
addition reactions, and substitution reactions.
Credit given for either C341 or S341.
