Chemistry | Organic Chemistry 2
C342 | 14300 | Pellerito

Prerequisite: C341 with a minimum grade of C-.
This course continues the survey of organic functional groups,
including aldehydes and ketones, carboxylic acid derivatives,
aromatic compounds and amines or carbohydrates. In addition, this
course introduces classic methods for carbon-carbon bond formation,
including the use of enolates and sigmatropic rearrangement
reactions. This course also covers methods for determining the
structure of organic compounds. Students learn to predict the
relative reactivity of functional groups and are introduced to the
concepts of thermodynamic and kinetic control. Students also improve
their skill in writing more complex chemical mechanisms and learn to
provide 3-5 step synthetic routes for making organic compounds.
Credit given for either C342 or S342.
