Chemistry | Organic Chemistry Lab 1
C343 | 14309 | Montgomery

Prerequisite: C341 with a minimum grade of C-. Requirement: C342
concurrently.
This laboratory course focuses on the fundamental techniques of
organic chemistry, and the students use these techniques toward the
synthesis of interesting organic compounds. Students are exposed to
the techniques of distillation, extraction, recystallization, and
chromatography. Students learn the basic spectroscopy that chemists
use to determine the structure of unknown compounds, including
Infrared Spectroscopy (IR), Gas Chromatography (GC), Mass
Spectrometry (MS) and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR). Students
focus on how to problem solve and have the opportunity to improve
their science writing skills.
Credit given for either C343 or S343.
