TOPIC: Issues on Second Language Acquisition

This course surveys research topics that are concerned with second
language acquisition of Chinese and Japanese. The primary goal of
the course is for students to get acquainted with the range of
theoretical issues that have implications and relevance to language
teaching, and to be able to discuss possible pedagogical
applications.

Students are expected to present summaries and commentaries of
reading assignments. It is hoped that students will be able to
design a second language acquisition research project by the end of
the semester. Some linguistic knowledge (e.g., a graduate course in
linguistics) is recommended although not required; it is suggested
that students without any linguistic background take a course in
linguistics concurrently with this course.
