8:00a-9:15a TR (25 students) 3 cr., A&H, IW.
L204 is designed to help you develop your ability to read carefully,
analyze thoughtfully, and write clearly about fiction. Since this
course fulfills the Intensive Writing requirement, there will be
frequent writing assignments, including three formal essays and a
series of one-page responses (“microthemes”). In addition, there
will be a midterm and a final exam. The theme of this section of
L204 is “Misfits, Rebels, and Freaks.” We will examine short stories
and novels that feature protagonists who are unable or unwilling to
assimilate into the mainstream social order and who face the often
disastrous consequences of this nonconformity. Texts will include
Bartleby's, The Scrivener, The Yellow Wallpaper, The
Ballad of the Sad Café, On the Road, The Things They
Carried, and Caucasia.
