Maura Stanton
1:00p-2:15p TR (15 students) 3 cr.
PREREQUISITE: W301 or permission of instructor, plus submission of
acceptable manuscript to instructor in advance of registration.
This is a poetry writing workshop for advanced poetry writing
students. Students will write approximately one poem a week, which
will be discussed in class. The poems will be formal exercises
based on models from The Making of a Poem: A Norton Anthology of
Poetic Forms. Students will learn to work in meter and
syllabics and create contemporary versions of villanelles, sestinas,
the blues, odes, etc. No tests or exams. No auditors. Students
must make copies of their poems for everyone in the class.
To apply to this class, place five poems, your email address, and a
list of previous creative writing classes you’ve taken (and names of
instructors) into Maura Stanton’s mailbox in BH442 at least one week
before your registration day. Submit you manuscript as soon as
possible, as places will be filled as people apply—if you have a
late registration date, apply at the beginning of the period to
reserve a space. No places will be saved for late registration. I
will email those admitted to the class. After you have been
approved, the Creative Writing Secretary in BH442 will issue you an
on-line authorization.
