It is in England, in its philosophical and literary
heritage, its politics and its relative isolation from the grip of
Latin culture that the seeds of Romanticism sprouted. Both Germany
and France turned to England, borrowing from its philosophy, its
artistic theories and its literature.
We will study the theories and the art of the most
significant contributors to the many different Romanticisms that
developed in the late 18th and early 19th century.
For undergraduate students: There will be a mid-term and a final.
