Who  wrote the history of American art, and how?  Who shaped  it and
for what ends?  How has American art history changed, and why?  What
conversations and conflicts have marked recent developments?  This
class will take up such questions in a historiographical survey and
critique of the literature of American art, from classical texts to
contemporary interventions.

Course work: weekly readings and discussions, plus research/writing
project.
