HISP-P 415 Women Writing In Portuguese (3 credits)

This course will focus on writings by women from Portugal, Brazil
and Lusophone Africa. Texts to be studied include poetry, theater,
fiction, letters and didactic works or “how to” guides for young
women in the early 20th century. Among our readings are examples of
early feminist writings that were censored by dictatorial regimes or
ran into trouble with the (male) critical establishment. Topics to
be discussed include motherhood, idealized and erotic love, race and
political oppression–and the extent to which these and other issues
cut across geographic lines. We’ll also consider why certain women
were included in the literary canon while others were not.

All students will write a final exam. Two short papers (3-5pp.)
will be required of undergraduate students while graduate students
will write a 10-12pp research paper.
