HISP-S 331  The Hispanic World I  (3 credits)
Prerequisite:  S310 or equivalent

This course is an introduction to the critical reading of Spanish
American literature and film. Not only will the course familiarize
you with some important Spanish American texts, but it will also
help you learn the critical vocabulary needed to analyze and
communicate your ideas effectively about these. We will read
representative works from the main genres of literature: prose
fiction, theater and poetry. Selections include short stories by
Borges and Cortázar, a drama by Usigli and numerous poems, as well
as two films. The grade for the course is based on active class
participation, short writing and oral assignments, and written
exams.  Note: Credit given for only two of the following:  S331,
