This course examines the genesis, evolution and collapse of the
Soviet regime, and covers both the major events in Soviet history and
the experiences of individuals. The basic texts are Geoffrey
Hosking, "The First Socialist Society," and Orlando Figesí, "A
Peopleís Tragedy." Other readings include John Scott, "Behind the
Urals," a story by an American who lived in the Soviet Union in the
1930s; Evgeniya Ginzburg, "Within the Whirlwind," a memoir by a
Soviet woman about her life in Stalinís labor camp; and "The Portable
Twentieth-Century Russian Reader," a collection of short stories.
