A portion of the above section reserved for majors
Above section meets with HIST-H 715

This course will focus mostly on both recent and classic historical
treatments of France in the eighteenth century. It will cover four
broad subjects: the political culture of the Old Regime; the
emergence of the Enlightenment; the causes and origins of the French
Revolution; the Revolution itself; and finally its social, cultural
and intellectual impact in both France and Europe. There will also
be a comparative aspect of the course, as we look at other
contemporary revolutions, especially in North America and the French
Caribbean. The course will emphasize historiography, although we
shall also read some important primary texts. Knowledge of French
is not required.
