With a particular focus on the Civil War as a social and cultural
transformation, this colloquium is built on readings, classic and
new, that consider the United States between 1845 and the end of the
century.  Changes in Americans’ sense of regional identity, gender,
race, and subjectivity form principal themes for the course.
