This intensive writing seminar will survey the history and culture of
the Jews in Spain until the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492
and of the Sephardic diaspora that emerged in the wake of the
expulsion. The course will examine the unique experience of the
Sephardic Jews under Islamic and Christian rules, the culture and
literature of the Jews in medieval Spain, the Marranos and their role
in Jewish history, the rise of the Sephardic centers in the Ottoman
Empire, in North Africa, and in Northwestern Europe, the Sephardic
encounter with modernity, the fate of the Sephardic Jews in the
Holocaust, and the integration of Sephardic immigrants in the State
of Israel. The course will provide a general historical background
and will focus on the reading and interpretation of primary sources
with regular writing assignments throughout the semester and a final
research paper.
