We will look at some of the ethical dilemmas faced by scholars doing
research in both the sciences and the humanities. Topics will
include plagiarism and collaboration, use of human and animal
subjects, and the responsible reporting of data. We will scrutinize
some famous cases of malpractice as well as trying to articulate
philosophical maxims for good practice.

Students will give brief oral reports an participate in debates, so
regular attendance is required. The written assignments will range
from short essays to a ten-page term paper. You may choose from a
wide range of topics for your written assignments.
