E517: Sociology of Music

This seminar surveys literature related to the following topics: the
social derivation of musical meaning, theoretical paradigms of the
sociology of music, music and societal institutions, social processes
in music, social roles and stratification in music, identity issues,
media and mass musical culture, musical taste, and musical
socialization. Assigned readings are supplemented by short synthesis
papers, a research paper and class presentation. There is room for
lots of choice in selecting readings for each topic (since readings
will be covered collaboratively) and for focusing on a particular
research area and angle on the readings. Readings include, Blaukopf,
Clayton, Herbert, & Middleton, De Nora, Green, Kingsbury, Martin,
Rideout & Paul,  Nettl, Shepherd, Scott, and Small.
