This Y396 course will examine the strategies and tactics that
Blacks, Asians and Latinos in America have used to influence their
political, economic and social status in American society.
Additionally, students will examine how the structure of American
governmental institutions and the policy making process influences
the abilities of citizens to vote, participate in political
campaigns and work effectively across racial as well as class
divisions to improve the quality of live in America. The course
requirements include one-page weekly writing assignments, a
comprehensive examination and a final researched (or empirical)
paper, which will allow students to examine a political problem
related to elections, political campaigns or urban politics and,
subsequently, to devised a balanced approach to addressing it. The
texts for the course are expected to include one or two main books
as well as selected articles and book chapters.
