(3 cr.)This course explores the development of tap dance and itís
place in American culture. Tap dance, like jazz music sprang up in
America from roots in African arts, performance practices and
aesthetic values, in confluence with European and other world music
and dance traditions. Tracing the development of tap serves as a lens
to study the evolution of American music, theatre and entertainment.
We will examine through a variety of resources: reading and
discussion, viewing film, listening to music and experientially by
