G751 | 14813 | Matt Guterl

(4 cr.) Jointly offered with AAAD-A694

This class explores the life and career of Josephine Baker - dancer,
singer, movie star, and cultural provocateur, and along the way
tracks her transgressions of race and her struggles against racism.
It "reads" Baker from differently disciplinary and interdisciplinary
perspectives, including those of Africana studies, performance
studies, film studies, biography, psychology, history, and literary
studies. Material for the class includes various critical
interpretations of Baker's work and many of the songs, movies, and
texts that she produced or performed.
