This course will provide an overview of anthropological approaches to
shamanism and other religious phenomena involving altered states of
consciousness. Special attention will be paid to the analysis of the
rituals in which these phenomena occur and to the image of the shaman
as it appears in the anthropological literature and in New Age religions.
