Description:
During this course you will read all of Ovid’s Metamorphoses, his
chronological compilation of Greco-Roman mythology, some in Latin,
the rest in English translation. You will also read selections
from an anthology of English poems based in some way—translation,
adaptation, etc.—on episodes from the Metamorphoses. Class time
will be spent not only in translation, but in discussion of Ovid’s
style as a writer of Latin narrative poetry, and of the poem’s
context—historical, social, literary.

Requirements:
20% class participation (including possible quizzes)
40% midterm and final exams
40% two 5-7 page papers
