New media offer artists an as yet unrecognized challenge for using processes
for circulating images and machines as artistic material. In this course
different circulation media (magazines, TV, Internet, video, digital signal, etc)
will be analyzed as to their syntactic properties. The main objective is the
“dissection” of the material: the “re-cycling” of found media. Different image
sources will be transferred from one medium to the other, allowing the
exploration of the semantic shifts that follow. The (im)possibilities of
application, such as animating a still, dismantling a moving picture,
aestheticizing the surface will be explored and tested.
