In this class we’ll be looking at some key trends in the post-1950
Euro-American thriller, paying particular attention to polars
(French crime dramas), gialli (Italian erotic thrillers which border
on horror) and erotic thrillers (which occasionally encroach on
porn). Films will include a British film, Mr. In-Between (2001),
which has finally been released in the U.S.; Svart Lucia, a Swedish
erotic thriller; North by Northwest; Claude Chabrol’s Hitchcockian
film Le Boucher; Caché; Wait Until Dark; The Dutchman (originally
written by Amiri Baraka); Blue Steel; Deep Red; gialli by Mario
Bava, Dario Argento and Aldo Lado; the BBC series Prime Suspect I; a
made-for-TV thriller and a direct-to-video erotic thriller.
Course work will include one short paper (5 pages), one longer paper
(12-15 pages), a midterm and a final exam.
