For American Francophiles, the recent banlieue riots were a painful
reminder that postcolonial violence, racism, and class tensions are
as much flash points in France as they are in the U.S. For this
class, we’ll be looking at some recent films which deal with
colonialism, postcolonialism, race and class, and reading them
against older films (made in the 1950s, 60s and 70s) that treated
the same topics. Films will include Diva (Jean Jacques Beineix,
1982), Police (Maurice Pialat, 1985), L.627 (Bertrand
Tavernier,1992), Black Girl (1966, Ousmane Sembene, Senegal),
Chocolat (Claire Denis 1988), L’état sauvage (François Girod, 1978),
Battle of Algiers (Gillo Pontecorvo, Italian/Algerian 1965), Le
Petit Soldat (Godard, 1962), La Trahison (Phillipe Fauçon 2005),
Nuit noire: 17. Octobre 1961 (Alain Tasma, made for French TV
2005), Caché (Michael Haneke, 2005), Four Hundred Blows (François
Truffaut 1959), Thé au harem d’Archimède (Mehdi Charef, 1985), Two
or Three Things I Know About Her (Jean-Luc Godard, 1966), La Haine
(Matthieu Kassovitz, 1995), Samia (Phillippe Fauçon, 2000),
L’esquive (Abdel Kechiche, 2003), Intimacy (Patrice Chéreau,
written by Hanif Kureishi, England 2001), and The Intruder (Claire
Denis 2004).

Course work to include an oral presentation, 1 short paper, 1
research paper and a take-home final exam.
