This course introduces a wide range of linguistic topics concerning
Japanese, including phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax,
semantics, language variation, and language acquisition.  In
examining these topics from the descriptive and comparative
perspectives, students are expected to develop analytical skills
pertinent to linguistic observations.  A series of problem solving
exercises will be given toward this goal.  A part of the course will
also be devoted to discussing sociolinguistics issues such as
dialects and gender indexing. 3 credits.  Undergraduate and graduate
credit.
