PREREQUISITE: Completion of the English composition requirement.

9:30a-10:45a TR (20 students) 3 cr., A&H, IW.

Open to Hutton Honors College students only.

This class will help you develop the basic skills of textual
analysis. It will introduce you to the methods, debates, issues, and
expectations that shape literary studies today. You will explore the
role of the literary critic, his or her relationship to the text,
other readers, and the world at large. Relatedly, you will evaluate
the various uses of literary criticism and the different social
purposes that criticism has served over time. Our discussions will
focus on classical and contemporary theory, looking carefully at how
history and culture can affect writing and reading.

The class will explore poetry, plays, short stories, and novels. You
will hone your speaking abilities through in-class presentations and
debates, and you will practice research and writing by completing
both short and long papers. You will be required to work both
individually and in groups, with exercises, outlines, drafts, and
presentations.

This is a discussion-based course, so both attendance and
participation are mandatory. Grading is based primarily on your
commitment, participation, and effort to learn both inside and out
of the classroom. In addition to the readings, you will be assigned
oral responses, informal written responses, and three formal papers
with revisions.
