Meets with FINA-A555 graduate section

From Zulu “love-letter” beadwork to the gold regalia of an Asante
king, crafts are traditionally a prominent part of the African
landscape, and today they are part of Africa’s contribution to the
global market, too. This course will examine the materials,
techniques, and products of sub-Saharan African craftspeople through
lectures, films, and student presentations. Topics will include
metalwork, ceramics, woodcarving, textiles, beadwork, and basketry.
Midterm and final exams, a research paper or project, and a group
assignment or a presentation are required.
