What were the major buildings of ancient Rome, how did they develop,
and how did they look? What did the Romans have to say about them?
What remains today? All these questions will be answered in this
course on the development of the ancient city. In fact, by the end
of the course students will be able to “walk” through the ancient
city both in their minds and on the ground when they finally reach
the caput mundi.
The format of the course will be largely lecture
presentations, based on slides of the city and its remains.
Professor Franklin, a Fellow of the American Academy in Rome, has
lived in Rome for several years and twice served as the Professor-In-
Charge at the Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies, Rome, so
he is eminently prepared to offer suggestions for coffee or meals at
